Innovative Batteries That Could Last Weeks, Rather Than Hours

Battery life for mobile devices has dramatically improved with countless innovations over the years (including a big reduction in cost) but our need for energy seems to be insatiable -- countless innovations have changed apps as well: more apps, bigger apps, more complex apps and much higher power requirements. Now, a Harvard ┬ástudent, Eesha Khare,…

New DNA technology promises 3D replica of your face through saliva

New technology will allow scientists to print accurate 3D models of human faces using only DNA as their guide. Mark Shriver of Pennsylvania State University and his team have been gathering 3D images of hundreds of volunteers and their saliva over the past several months. These photographs have then been used to find over 7,000 points of reference from facial features, then fed in to software which finds similarities between DNA, sex, race and facial features. Shriver found that 20 genes with only 24 variants were "reliable indicators" of a person's facial shape -- including eye shape, nose, [...]

How Should Disruptive Technology Help Large Companies?

Julie Meyer, CEO of Ariadne Capital, on the economics that disrupt technology Despite all that you might have heard about Silicon Roundabout, digital entrepreneurs can’t and don’t operate in their own bubble. Importantly, they are able to help the CEOs of large companies push into top gear. They are out there, working on solving the problems that those running FTSE 100 businesses, medium-sized enterprises and multinational organisations are facing. These large companies have scale, distribution, reach, audience and often an established brand and reputation. They can be seen as the highways, while the entrepreneurs and digital industrialists are the [...]

The Potential of 3D Printing Electronics

3D electronic printing holds promise of applications for soldiers As researchers at Picatinny Arsenal explore the potential of 3-dimensional printing, they envision the potential to embed a radio antenna on the side of a Soldier's helmet, or print sensors directly onto a weapon or even an article of clothing. Over the past few years, advancements in 3D printing have enabled scientists to print items ranging from body organs to candy. At Picatinny, scientists and engineers are using additive manufacturing and 3D printing to print electronics, weapon components, and training models. Additive manufacturing, which includes 3D printing, lets engineers create [...]
